Generali 190 Anniversary

Founded in Trieste on 26th December 1831, the celebrations for the Group’s 190 years saw an array of initiatives taking place throughout the whole of 2021 and at the beginning of 2022.

“Reditude”, the Group’s 1st global advertising campaign is launched.

2020

Supporting communities in the darkest hours

To address the economic and health crisis caused by Covid-19, Generali creates an Extraordinary International Fund of up to €100 million to offer immediate assistance in a quickly evolving crisis and to support economic recovery efforts in the countries affected.

Promoting a culture of ownership by fostering empowerment, engagement towards the new strategic objectives and participation in sustainable value creation are the core principles of Generali’s share plan for employees.

2018

Becoming Lifetime Partner

The strategic plan Generali 2021 is presented during the Investor Day with its ambitious goals among which becoming Lifetime Partner to customers, as well as leading the European insurance market for individuals, professionals, and SMEs.

2004

A code of ethics

The Group creates an official company code of ethics, putting into black and white the principles that it has always stood by; honesty and fairness, impartiality, professionalism and valuing people.

1994

Insurance by phone

Genertel is founded - the first company in Italy to specialize in the sale of insurance policies over the phone and later, online; and quickly becomes the national forerunner in the area of direct marketing.

1971

A modern company

‘Assicurazioni’ is dropped from the new logo - from now on the company will be known to the world simply as ‘Generali’. The winged lion also gets a facelift.

1964

To the moon…

Generali makes its debut in Space insurance by providing insurance coverage to the "San Marco" project for the construction and launch of Italian scientific satellites.

1963

A new type of cover

In conjunction with partners Concorde, the Group launches Europ Assistance, designed to help the beleaguered traveler in times of difficulty far from home. An innovative new type of policy designed for both tourists and business travelers.

1949

A TWO-SPEED RECOVERY

While in Eastern Europe virtually everything Generali is nationalized or requisitioned, it’s a very different story elsewhere. The company consolidates its position in western Europe and directs its attention to both north and south America.

1916

CERTIFIED RELIEF

The Italian government grants Generali Italian nationality, now Rome’s head office can operate without limitations.

1900

A YOUNG ARTIST, CALLED PABLO PICASSO, SENDS A SKETCH TO A SPANISH SUBSIDIARY OF GENERALI

It depicts his version of motherhood, as a concept of security.

1893

IL BOLLETTINO

Ahead of its time, Generali launches what will become the longest-running in-house periodical in Italy, Il Bollettino (The Bulletin), helping to consolidate a sense of unity within the company’s personnel.

GENERALI INSURES THE AIRSHIP THAT CONQUERS THE NORTH POLE, DEMONSTRATING ITS SPIRIT OF INNOVATION AND PIONEERING

ITALIANS STRIKE GOLD

The recession of 1873 moves Generali to protect its shareholders, who are mostly Italian, paying out dividends of 20 gold Francs.

1857

ON THE TRIESTE STOCK EXCHANGE

Amid the ongoing prosperity of both Generali and the city of Trieste, the company is listed on the stock exchange in the city of its birth.

1855

THE START OF WELFARE OF THE WORKERS

Generali establishes a pension fund to protect and safeguard the families of deceased employees.

1848

A NEW NAME

After the turmoil the company drops the adjective ‘Austro-Italiche’ and becomes simply ‘Assicurazioni Generali’, and the imperial eagle on the logo prepares to give way to the lion.

1836

THE PHOENIX RISES FROM THE ASHES

Venice’s famed La Fenice (The Phoenix) Theatre is devastated by fire, but the indemnification from Generali allows reconstruction work to begin immediately. Just twelve months later, the curtain of La Fenice rises again.
